This condenser is for use in the darkfield microscopy technique. It is used to study unstained transparent samples with low light absorption that cannot be seen while using the brightfield techniques. It only works with dry (non-immersion) objectives with an aperture of up to 0.9, providing magnification in the range of 4x to 60x.

The MAGUS DF1 A 0.9 darkfield condenser is mounted on the microscope instead of the Abbe condenser for the brightfield microscopy. The optimal contrast of the image is achieved by using a cover glass of 0.17mm thickness and a glass slide of 1–1.2mm thickness.
